Reactive Dog Grooming
Specialist grooming for reactive, anxious and fearful dogs — one-on-one in a quiet Murrumba Downs home salon, servicing North Brisbane.
Grooming Without the Stress
At Reactive Paws Dog Grooming, reactive dog grooming isn’t a sideline — it’s the reason we opened, and it’s in our name. We understand that not every dog enjoys being groomed. Many experience real fear, anxiety or stress, and some have had negative past experiences that make regular grooming feel impossible. Our goal is to change that through patience, understanding and consistency. We dedicate one day each week exclusively to reactive dogs from across North Brisbane and Moreton Bay, giving them the extra time, care and one-on-one attention they need in a calm, supportive environment — with no other dogs on the premises.
Our mother-and-daughter team works together on reactive days: Emily grooms, while Sophie — a dog trainer who specialises in nervous and reactive dogs — helps your dog build confidence through gentle handling and gradual desensitisation wherever possible. We believe every dog deserves compassionate, low-stress grooming, and we always prioritise their physical and emotional wellbeing over finishing a haircut.
We also work closely with local veterinarians and are happy to accept veterinary referrals when additional support is needed. For some dogs, sedation-assisted grooming may be the safest and kindest option, and we will always recommend this when it is in the best interests of your dog’s welfare. Our aim is to work alongside you and your vet to make every grooming experience as safe, positive and stress-free as possible.
The problems we solve

- Panic, shaking, growling, snapping or shutting down during grooming
- Bad past grooming experiences that have made things worse each visit
- Matted, overgrown coats and long nails because grooming has become impossible at home
- Owners who dread grooming day as much as their dog does

Do's and Don'ts
Do
- Tell us everything about your dog's triggers and history — the more we know, the better we can plan
- Bring your dog hungry-ish so high-value treats carry real weight
- Allow extra time; reactive sessions are never run to a stopwatch
- Keep appointments regular — consistency is how trust is built
Don't
- Punish or scold your dog for fearful behaviour before or after a session
- Expect a full haircut on the first visit — progress beats perfection
- Sneak away without saying goodbye or hover anxiously — we'll guide you on what helps your dog most
- Wait until the coat is badly matted before reaching out
Frequently Asked Questions
Any dog that barks, lunges, growls, snaps, trembles or shuts down in response to handling, strangers, other dogs or grooming equipment. If grooming is stressful for your dog, they're welcome here.
In most cases, yes. Tell us the full history when you enquire and we'll plan the session around it, including muzzle-conditioning if appropriate.
Usually a meet-and-greet: your dog explores the salon, takes treats, and we attempt only what they're comfortable with. The goal is to end on a win.
Because every dog's pace is different. Hourly pricing ($140/hr grooming, $70/hr desensitisation) means you only pay for the time your dog actually needs, and we're never tempted to rush.
Many dogs graduate to standard appointments over time. Some always need the quiet day — and that's fine too.
Only when needed for safety, and ideally after positive muzzle-conditioning. A well-introduced muzzle can actually lower a dog's stress because handling becomes calmer.
For a small number of dogs, grooming without sedation causes more distress than it's worth. In those cases we'll recommend speaking to your vet, and we can work in with veterinary support.
We understand that leaving a reactive or nervous dog can be difficult however, we do not allow owners to stay with their dogs during grooming as some dogs can become more anxious, distracted or protective when they can see their owners. Many dogs are calmer and easier to reassure when their owner isn't in the grooming area. Providing a quiet ono on one environment allows us to build trust and monitor their body language. Your dogs welfare will always come first and if we feel you dog is becoming to stressed to continue safely we will stop, give them a break or discuss alternative options with you.
For dogs in a desensitisation program, short and frequent beats long and rare. We'll recommend a schedule, often every 2–4 weeks.
Yes — we work closely with local veterinarians and welcome referrals for anxious and reactive dogs across North Brisbane.
